PFI is governed by a board of directors. The directors are elected at the Annual Conference by PFI members from the organization's five Iowa districts (see map). Two farmer directors are elected from each district, plus two at-large non-farmer members are elected for a total of 12 board members. Directors serve three-year terms. They can be re-elected twice to serve a total of nine years before they must go off the board for at least a year. To be eligible to serve on the board, a candidate must be a resident of Iowa and a farmer, defined as "anyone who files a schedule F on their federal income tax return or who conducts their business of farming through a corporation, limited liability company, or partnership, provided such entity was not or would not be deemed to be a passive activity as currently defined by the Internal Revenue Service" -PFI Bylaw III, Section 4- (at-large members are excluded from this requirement).
